One Free Community 3rd Birthday Celebration

OFC birthday banner with balloons and streamers Reads: 3 Year Anniversary

One Free Community is three years old this March, 2025! We had a wonderful birthday celebration where we shared stories, talked about our current state of the world and how we can organize to survive and thrive, supported each other with words of encouragement, and shared resources, song links, and memes!

Origin Story

In March 2022 several folks began doing TikTok LIVEs with the idea of creating a mutual-aid network called One Free App that would center disability and racial justice, decolonization, and queerness. Committees formed organically to work on branding, social media, planning, community, and administration. Through discussion we agreed to rebrand the main Discord server as “One Free Community” to highlight our focus on building the community even with the app still in development.

Time Line Updates

In March 2023, we celebrated our 1-year anniversary with a virtual silent dance party, and in true neurodivergent fashion people broke out into other forms of entertainment like parallel play and party games.

In April 2023, OneFreeCommunity’s TikTok channel reached 10,000 followers thanks to contributions from several members. And started our public calendar for everyone to attend events.

In July 2023,  in response to the lack of COVID precautions in our communities, we hosted our biggest event yet: Virtual Pride with over 300 participants.

In Oct 2023, we began hosting Virtual Protests to be more inclusive of disabled and youth organizers by expanding the concept of presence to include digital space. Our anti-genocide protest space provides an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, learn about pressing issues, and participate in movement work that seeks to bring about positive change. We collect resources on our Linktr.ee/onefreecommunity

In Dec 2023, We launched our website OneFreeCommunity.com with the help of our community to develop the content and design. We also made a 2023 In Review deck to see how far we have come!

In March 2024, Co-Founder Jesenia, went to DC to lobby for disability justice, we started regular community lead grant writing co-working sessions, Kicked off our inaugural Community Needs Assessment, and continue to expand Virtual Protest programming to include more countries experiencing on-going genocides.

Spring 2024, started Voices on the Ground, an offshoot of Virtual Protests, to hear directly from the people impacted by the multiple ongoing genocides.  We also partnered with various other organizations to co-host hybrid events such as Black Phoenix Organizing Collective (BPOC).

Fall 2024, We wrapped up the production of our second annual Accessible Virtual Pride celebration!
