Digital Campus Encampment

Our digital encampment was originally designed for disabled students and others who could not make it to campus encampments in person due to safety concerns.  Using the gathertown platform and a combination of original assets and programs, Calling Up Justice manifested the virtual world through the leadership of Claudia Alick and J Mase III.   Many physical encampments have closed. Today the digital encampment serves a diverse community of participants who continue to need access and are dedicated to ending genocides worldwide.

Gather Town is an interactive virtual space that simulates real-life, in-person interactions. With an 8-bit pixelized video game aesthetic and familiar online video and chat features, Gather Town allows users to move through online spaces using their arrow keys for keyboard controls. The Digital Encampment uses an open system design aesthetic, participants with design permissions can add and remove elements to the camp. It now includes original assets and an exciting curation of elements.

The camp invites everyone to practice respect, get to know each other, listen to elders and those who came before, celebrate what is now, exchange knowledge and power, and prepare for the future. There are videogames, beautifully designed spaces, books, videos, art, archives of live streamed events, and links to so many diverse resources. You can spend hours just in the central camp which focuses on pro-Palestine, disability justice, and student encampment information.  We recommend taking our subway system to visit the Main offices, Art centers, Land Back Land, Liberation for All Classroom, LGBTQ2S Oasis, the Quiet Plaza, DE Liberation Bookstore and so much more. The digital encampment grows every day. We invite all who are invested in collective liberation to come.

The digital encampment was inspired by F* the Gala, CripCreate,  Pandemic Solidarity 4 Life, Maiamama’s CUJ Digital Studios, and our Virtual Pride gathertown. This project is produced by Calling Up Justice and led by Claudia Alick, J Mase III, and those most impacted.
