Our Calling Up Justice interns, Claudia and Jesenia, had the opportunity to visit Jay’s Hub Aug 15 2026, a community space connected to Disability Justice Culture Club (DJCC) in Oakland. We spent time with Jay reflecting on the legacy of Stacey Park Millbern, whose vision and leadership helped shape the disability justice movement, and discussing the future of DJCC. It was an opportunity to connect over the importance of building community infrastructure rooted in disability justice, mutual aid, and collective care.

Jay shared exciting plans for the space where we gathered, including a community fridge, expanded gardening, and dedicated areas for community gatherings and performances. We talked about the possibilities of creating spaces where disabled people can access resources, share knowledge, make art, and simply spend time together. Niya connected with Jay over gardening, and we even brought home fresh vegetables!

We COVID tested before gathering so we could share space and eat comfortably. We also took the opportunity to share some of the Free PPE we had gathered with DJCC. Jay treated us to a delicious barbecue, making the afternoon feel like a gathering of friends as much as an opportunity for learning and collaboration. This is how we take care of each other the share power.

There is something very special about spending crip time together, sitting in the shade beside growing plants, sharing food, and talking about disability justice. These moments of connection remind us that disability justice isn’t only something we organize for. It’s something we practice in our relationships, our gardens, our meals, and the ways we make room for one another. Our visit to Jay’s Hub was a beautiful reminder that community care and cultural organizing grow from the same soil. We left nourished, inspired, and excited about the future of DJCC and the communities we continue to build together
