National Disability Theatre La Jolla Playhouse POP

February 1 2020.  during the day!

In January of 2019 I provided unsolicited advice on white dominant systems design to National Disability Theater. (This is a thing I do.  Call executive leadership and give free advice.  Doesn’t everyone?)  They thanked me graciously and invited me to apply to consult for their strategic planning but Calling Up Justice did not end up taking the contract.  Later I accepted an invitation to join their advisory board, but there were never any meetings.  SoI was every curious about their progress and artistic content. Then I was invited to experience their first production in person in San Diego.  I was interested to encounter their work for the first time and connect with more of the artists. They asked me to travel there but I was ill and couldn’t fly.  We instead arranged a transmedia experience.  I read the script, viewed the performance via FaceTime, and shared remarks via zoom projection to the audience. It was a semi-successful experiment in accessibility and remote presentation. I did not really meet anyone involved with the project accept for AD’s and 1 staff that connected me digitally.  I did not learn about the event around their play but fully experienced the play.  I’m glad I was able to honor the commitment and collaborate for disabled justice.

In partnership with National Disability Theatre (NDT), La Jolla’s Playhouse POP Tour, Emily Driver’s Great Race Through Time and Space, Written by A.A. Brenner and Gregg Mozgala | Directed by Talleri A. McRae and Mickey Rowe

As a history-obsessed 12-year-old, Emily Driver uses her YouTube channel to celebrate landmark moments of activism and change. So when her request for a needed wheelchair is denied, she takes matters into her own hands – and launches into a time-travelling trip across the country where she meets trailblazing leaders from the past who have fought for equal rights. On the journey, she learns the power of speaking up, and how one voice can inspire others to create a more accessible world. In partnership with the National Disability Theatre, a team of actors, writers, and designers with disabilities brings this inventive and original story to life.
