I was a guest on The Meh Generation podcast to talk about one of the most powerful Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes, The Drumhead.
About the Hosts
The podcast is hosted by Cam and Dan. Cam is a lifelong Trekkie with a deep love for the series, while Dan hasn’t seen much Trek before and brings a fresh set of eyes. Their mix of deep fandom and outsider curiosity makes for great conversations that are equal parts fun and critical.
Why This Episode Still Hits Hard
“The Drumhead,” which first aired in 1991, is a courtroom drama episode set on the Enterprise. Admiral Satie arrives to investigate what seems like a simple case, but her search for the truth quickly turns into a political purge. What starts as a security inquiry spirals into paranoia, scapegoating, and fearmongering.
On the podcast, we talked about how directly this episode speaks to our current political climate. The way Admiral Satie uses suspicion to consolidate power mirrors the rise of authoritarianism and fascist rhetoric today. Just like in the show, we see politicians in the real world weaponize fear, target marginalized people, and chip away at civil liberties in the name of “security.”
We also talked about nepotism, both within the episode and as a real-world issue. Satie’s reputation rests partly on her family name, echoing the way dynastic privilege and family connections still shape politics and leadership today.
Tune In
If you care about Star Trek, politics, or both, this is an episode of The Meh Generation you’ll want to hear. Cam, Dan, and I explored how The Drumhead still challenges us to think about power, justice, and what it takes to resist fear-driven politics.
