courageous space agreements

courageous spaces theater advocacy project communication agreements

These are the courageous space agreements provided by TAP for the AAAA workshop we produced together. They say “courageous” and not “safe space” because safe space equals comfort and they are inviting participants to step outside of their comfort zone so that you can grow today. Spaces are often unsafe for people of color.

Use ‘I’ Statements – The devil has enough advocates, speak from your own experience. Also, free yourself from having to represent any whole identity; you don’t have to speak for your gender, race or generation!

Participate– Inclusion means every voice is represented. So whether we’re in group discussions or in more private breakout rooms, please do bring your diverse voice to today

Make space for multiple truths/norms- The dominant culture encourages binary thinking. Here we acknowledge multiple experiences. And by leaning into that discomfort you may find growth.

Do what you need to take care of yourself – You know your limits and needs better than anyone else so feel free to turn off the camera and step away when you need to. Just inform us in the chat so we do not assign you to a breakout room.

Caveat on assuming positive intent- By downplaying actual impact, assuming positive intent can deprioritize the experience of already marginalized people. Think of it as a cooperative and not antagonistic place.

Turn Taking to avoid overlapping speech, No need to make an excuse in intro or laugh at others if embarrassed, ask for help and interrupt if we need to slow

Are there any other agreements you would like me to add to this?

Can I get a thumbs up from everyone that you agree?
