Calling Up Justice Celebrates SF Disability Pride and the Disability Cultural Center Anniversary!

Calling Up Justice had a wonderful time celebrating SF Disability Pride and the anniversary of the SF Disability Cultural Center July 19 2026! We invited our interns to join us, and this time, instead of tabling or producing programming, our assignment was simple: show up, enjoy ourselves, get to know the Center better, and connect with disability community. It was a chance to experience the space as community members, celebrate disability culture, and build relationships without the pressure of organizing an event.

The entire Center was open and filled with activity! Live performers entertained the crowd, including an incredible Black disabled opera singer whose performance was a highlight of the day. In a side room, people gathered to watch World Cup games. Throughout the space, vendors shared artwork, handmade bags, delicious food, disability-specific products, and personal passions. There was a huge section wee folks were putting together quilt squares for the Alice Wong Quilt Project led by M Eilo. We loved seeing the diversity of interests represented, from a playful Pokémon table to a City of San Francisco safety information table distributing mini first aid kits. Some of our favorite discoveries were the vendors creating beautiful mask chains designed for different types of masks. We love seeing creativity and personal expression become part of accessible, COVID-safer culture! Our own intern Kameya also hosted a table offering Filipino card readings, bringing another wonderful cultural practice into the celebration.

The festivities included a cake cutting to celebrate the Disability Cultural Center’s anniversary. It was a joyful reminder that disability culture is about more than access to events. It’s about creating spaces where we can share our talents, pursue our passions, celebrate our identities, and enjoy being together. Calling Up Justice has loved collaborating with the SF Disability Cultural Center throughout this year, and we look forward to another year of creativity, connection, and disability community building!
