Calling Up Black Futures Work Across Interconnected Movement Ecosystems

calling up black futures Work Across Interconnected Movement Ecosystems

Calling Up Justice concerns it’s a mycorrhizal forest where we are trees connected though an underground and interconnected system of rhizomes, mycelium, and other animals. The central root of our oppression begins in anti-blackness and this informs all our designs when we work to end oppression.

Our practice embodies the disability justice principle of cross movement solidarity.  “Disability justice can only grow into its potential as a movement by aligning itself with racial justice, reproductive justice, queer and trans liberation, prison abolition, environmental justice, anti-police terror, Deaf activism, fat liberation, and other movements working for justice and liberation. This means challenging white disability communities around racism and challenging other movements to confront ableism. Through cross-movement solidarity, we create a united front.”

CripCreate is our weekly, disability-justice-centered online co-working space designed for and by all Deaf and Disabled people. We have been making a concerted effort to invite our community and many times the room is majority Black and that tells us we are producing racial justice with our disability justice

Our leadership team of all femmes also represents issues of immigration, transness, disability, and different local specific issues.

We are producing programs with and for all the communities we are a part of and impacted by. However we are always making an effort to center Blackness and Black people. Our Accessible Virtual Pride includes BIPOC specific programming, Ghostlight was produced with and for the entire community but we made sure to include the artistic director of the National Black Theater. Mouthwater Dance the disability burlesque dance festival we are supporting is led by a Black femme.

Our anti-genocide work began with the specificity of Black people being killed extrajudicially by officers of the state which inevitably incudes Palestine, abortion rights, Sudan, LGBTQIA2S+, and immigrant and climate justice. We are intentionally seeking out those most impacted on the variety of issues that intertwine to oppress us so we can have collective liberation.
