Happy Juneteeth! Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas. #juneteenth

This Juneteenth Claudia shares a special message about slave labor!

Prisoners in the US are part of a hidden workforce linked to hundreds of popular food brands. Check your shelves!13th is a 2016 American documentary film directed by Ava DuVernay. It explores the prison-industrial complex, and the “intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States”. The title refers to the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, adopted in 1865, which abolished slavery throughout the United States and ended involuntary servitude, except as punishment for convicted criminals. The film argues that this exemption has been used to continue the practice of involuntary servitude in the form of penal labor. #juneteenth
