Teaching Tech, Building Power: RRTT OBS Basics Comes to Echoes of the City

On Saturday, March 14, the Rapid Response Tech Team hosted an OBS Basics class for volunteers with LA Spoonie Collective as part of Echoes of the City: Disability Arts Exchange, a curated disability arts initiative running through 2027 in partnership with The Music Center.

The class brought together a small group of LA Spoonie Collective volunteers who will be broadcasting virtual workshops for the Echoes of the City program. Over 90 minutes on Zoom, participants learned the fundamentals of OBS Studio — from setting up scenes and sources to configuring audio with Virtual Audio Cable — and walked away with a working broadcast setup.

The session covered everything from the basics of the OBS interface to more hands-on skills: capturing specific windows, sizing and cropping sources, routing audio, switching scenes, and using Studio Mode to transition between layouts cleanly. Participants also learned how to export and share Scene Collections, so any volunteer can import the same setup without having to build it from scratch.

One of the highlights of the class was working through real platform differences together. PC and Mac handle some settings differently in OBS, and participants brought both — so the group looked up and worked through those differences in real time. That kind of live troubleshooting is exactly what the RRTT approach is built for.

By the end of the session, participants were fully trained in OBS basics and ready to broadcast for the Echoes of the City program.

The Rapid Response Tech Team exists because technical knowledge shouldn’t be hoarded. This class is part of an ongoing commitment to making sure that organizations doing disability arts work, social justice work, and community organizing have the tools and the training to tell their own stories — live, on their own terms.Echoes of the City continues through 2027.
