A framework by Maiamama for Calling Up Justice

We throw the word “woke” around a lot. But what does it actually mean — and why does it matter where someone falls on that spectrum?
The Woke Clock is a framework created to help us map awareness. Not judgment. Not a scorecard. A map.
Here’s the starting point: being woke means your eyes are open to the fact that systemic injustice exists and is actively affecting people around you. That’s it. Awareness. What you do with that awareness is a separate conversation.
The clock gives that awareness a shape.
2 am is where people who are directly experiencing marginalization live. But experiencing oppression firsthand doesn’t automatically mean understanding all oppression. Blind spots exist here too — across disability, queerness, class, and other axes of identity outside your own experience.
4 am is where awareness has grown wider and action has followed. These are people showing up, learning, making mistakes, and correcting course. But showing up isn’t enough on its own — how you show up matters just as much.
6 am is where people are just beginning to notice that others might be treated differently, without yet grasping the systemic scale of it. When called out, they tend to center their own discomfort instead of the harm caused. They’re not a lost cause. They’re just not there yet.
10 am — with a slash through it — is different. These are people deeply invested in keeping their worldview intact. They are committed to the idea that the world is fair, that we live in a meritocracy, that everyone gets what they deserve. That isn’t a misunderstanding. It’s a choice. Protect your time and energy accordingly.
The Woke Clock doesn’t ask you to fix everyone. It asks you to see where people are — so you can make clearer decisions about how to engage, who to invest in, and when to walk away.
Yes, this work is exhausting. Knowing that doesn’t make it easier. It just means you stop being surprised.
